After leading Argentina to their second World Cup title, Lionel Messi is on the verge of becoming the first player in history to win the Ballon d'Or eight times. An accomplishment Messi thanks the high heavens and his teammates for helping him achieve.
But does he really deserve to win this year's Ballon d'Or? Of course, not but Messi's is a marketable player with millions of fans who are then backed by some of the biggest sponsors in football, including FIFA itself.
To dampen the crescendo of noises already calling for the Ballon d'Or to be canceled since its dubious and insincere. The Host Committee has tabled three criteria that must be met by the player before he or she wins: For the whole season, a player must be outstanding, Messi was bang average for PSG but brilliant for Argentina.
Secondly, a player must show respect and solidarity to the opposition team, Messi was rude and disrespectful to the Netherlands national team, especially to Louis van Gaal. Thirdly, the player must have a clean slate throughout the season.
Put everything into the context and then ask yourself this simple question. Why should Lionel Messi win the Ballon d'Or if he played so badly for PSG while others played 58 or more games and delivered for their clubs?
Secondly, why is the World Cup now a criterion to win the trophy? If it was, why was Spain (Andres Iniesta- 2010), Germany (Manuel Neuer- 2014) and France (2018- Kylian Mbappe) all denied the trophy having been the best players in the last edition so of the World Cup.
Shamelessly, the Ballon d'Or was given to Messi for helping Barcelona win the Champions League in 2010.
Germany won the World Cup and Manuel Neuer was the best player but Cristiano Ronaldo was given the Ballon D'or because Real Madrid won the Champions League.
The same thing happened in 2018, Luka Modric won the Ballon d'Or for winning the Champions League with Real Madrid while finishing as runners up to France. Kylian Mbappe was France's player best but denied the trophy.
Last season, Erling Haaland won the FA Cup, the Champions League, scored a record 36 Premier League goals in 38 matches to help Manchester City win a record 3 consecutive league title. He also won the UEFA Super Cup.
Impressed with his unbelievable display, the world's finest manager Pep Guardiola said when asked who should win the Ballon d'Or. 'Haaland deserves it, but Messi is Messi. He scored 50 goals and won the treble for us, Haaland deserves it".
So, if Haaland accomplished more than Lionel Messi, why should he be denied just because its Messi? Its scandalous that Haaland who outperformed Lionel Messi last season will be ignored, really shameful.
There's a reason why German, Italian and now Portuguese footballers no longer attend Ballon d'Or ceremonies. The individual accolade has become worthless and only exist by name and not importance.
