Over $400m have been spent in revitalizing Manchester United under the watch of Ten Hag but it feels the club is sinking to oblivion rather raising to prominence.
After five games played, United are in 13th position and 9 points behind defending champions Manchester City. You could presumptuously rule Manchester United out of the title race so early in the season.
Pep Guardiola's burst of laughter after been asked of Manchester United during a press conference says it all about the club and its ambition. Guardiola is not threatened by United- not now or in the future.
Why? Manchester United are miles away from Manchester City in terms of management, coaching, scouting, players and even the quality of the stadium.
So, who are we to blame for this gulf in class? Gary Neville rightly points the owners- The Glazers- for failing to invest properly in the club. Ironically, the owners have invested over $1.2b in the club to get them back on track but nothing seems to work out.
Coach-wise, the club owners have hired and sacked the likes of David Moyes; Luis van Gaal, Jose Mourinho and Ole Gunnar Solskjears all in the aim of achieving stability and hopefully perfection.
Erik Ten Hag appointment was viewed by many as a game changer, and many believed United will get back to their brilliant best.
Teg Hag not only stopped Manchester City from winning the quadruplet by winning the Caraboa Cup, but also finished in the top 4.
That bright start opened room for optimism despite dealing with a crescendo of confusions emanating from a certain dissatisfied Portuguese. Financially, he was backed to assemble a world class squad and compete for titles.
But sad to write, some of the players he signed don't really make sense.
Lisandro Martinez, Casemiro and Christian Eriksen do make sporting sense, they're super talented players who add value to a team. Amrabat is a good player so is Rasmus Hojlund.
The aforementioned players are valuable but what about the likes of Tyrell Malacia, Antony, Martin Dubravka, Mason Mount and Andre Onana. None of these players will play first team football at Manchester City, Arsenal or even Liverpool. So why are they're at Manchester United?
The club owners have a vision to succeed so those the manager, but the players signed for huge money don't really make sense.
Jadon Sancho just like Memphis Depay and Di Maria are typical examples of players who don't fit into Manchester United DNA so why where they signed in the first place?
Manchester United do have a blueprint of how they want to play and win but the major problem the club currently have is identifying the right player to achieve that fate.
You don't sign Mason Mount for $75 when Mac Alister is available for just $45. Nor do you terminate Dea Gea's current and sign a mediocre goalkeeper in Onana.
Sadly, this season already looks lost. Teg Hag's bright start has faded and the possibility of getting sacked looms if result don't improve. The next coach must get it right, he must sign superstars that actually break a press and drop deep while Brighton spring 30 passes together before scoring.
