According to Section 33 of the Nigerian constitution, capital crimes include those relating to terrorism, third-degree murder, rape, robbery, kidnapping, sodomy, homosexuality, blasphemy, adultery, incest, helping someone who is legally incapable of consenting to suicide, perjury, and military mutiny.
The following crimes are eligible for the death penalty, yet none of them address the main problem impeding Nigeria's advancement and development.
The country possesses both human and material resources to rival any nation in the world but yet, the nation swallows in abject poverty; malnutrition, illiteracy, delipidated or broken-down infrastructure, communal wars, gang related violence, banditry, terrorism, and worst of all, spread of infectious disease in both rural an urban area.
Like many other countries, Cameroon has expressed its concerns about the grave extent of bribery and corruption in all spheres of the national economy and the damage it is bringing to the future of its citizens through several editorials.
Eradicating bribery and corruption are almost impossible in Nigeria knowing how rich and powerful the political, religious and traditional leaders have become.
Remarkably, just 10% of the current political elite were legitimately chosen by the electorate in just concluded elections; the others who have nothing to offer but to loot the nation's resources bribed their way through every corrupt institution called- INEC (Independent National Electoral Commission).
Sadly, this is why Nigeria is in this current mess which has forced millions of youths to leave the nation's shore 'japa' to foreign lands in search of a better live.
To repositioning Nigeria, the nation must introduce death sentence for corrupt leaders who spread hate messages that instigate wars between Christians against Muslims. Leaders who connive with terrorist to raid villagers, rape and maim both women and children.
Leaders who sponsor illegal activities in the communities, touts or thugs to rig elections and bribe officials to change results for themselves or others.
Once death sentence is seen passed, implemented and those in power are touched irrespective of who they're Nigeria will start recovering.
